The UK’s Network Rail has announced that the Scottish Borders Council has given planning approval for the construction of a new station at Reston in Scotland.
The scope of work on the project involves construction of a two new 270m long, 4m wide platforms station on the East Coast mainline, including car parking spaces and a new access road to the station.
It will also include a new footbridge to cross the railway including escape stairs and footpaths on either end of the platforms, on both sides.
The new station will be fully accessible with lifts and a footbridge that will connect both the platforms.
The project also includes installation of lighting columns throughout the site, as well as the associated infrastructure/equipment including CCTV.
A new mini roundabout will be created near the existing junction at Reston Main Street along with a new road and footway/cycle path, which will be created parallel with The Orchard to serve the new station as well as the Orchard.
Scottish Borders Council Infrastructure, Transport and Travel executive member Councillor Gordon Edgar said: “The Council has provided over £2.3m towards the cost of this project, which will deliver significant benefits to the Berwickshire community, providing easy local access to the east coast mainline services which will in turn make this area more attractive for inward investment and housing growth, which will both support local communities and the economy.”
