Samsung Electronics has unveiled plans to build a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Taylor, Texas in the US with an investment of $17bn.

Construction on the facility is planned to start in the first half of 2022, with commissioning scheduled in the second half of 2024.

Covering an area of more than 5 million square metres, the new manufacturing plant will serve as Samsung’s key location for global semiconductor manufacturing capacity together with its new production line in Pyeongtaek, South Korea.

The new facility is expected to help boost production of advanced logic semiconductor solutions and improve supply chain resilience of logic chips.

Samsung Electronics Device Solutions division vice chairman and CEO Kinam Kim said: “With greater manufacturing capacity, we will be able to better serve the needs of our customers and contribute to the stability of the global semiconductor supply chain.”

The facility will be equipped to manufacture products based on advanced process technologies for application in areas such as 5G, mobile, high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI).

Texas Governor Abbott said: “Companies like Samsung continue to invest in Texas because of our world-class business climate and exceptional workforce.

“Samsung’s new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Taylor will bring countless opportunities for hardworking Central Texans and their families and will play a major role in our state’s continued exceptionalism in the semiconductor industry.”

During the selection of the Taylor location, the company considered various factors such as local government support, local semiconductor ecosystem, infrastructure stability, and community development opportunities.

The facility is expected to create at least 6,500 jobs during the construction phase as well as more than 2,000 high-tech jobs directly and thousands of related jobs once it is commissioned.
