The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, has announced the completion of traffic enhancements on Sheikh Zayed Road.
These improvements were carried out to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion at critical intersections, and increase road capacity.
Sheikh Zayed Road is one of Dubai’s key economic corridors, which is surrounded by residential areas and economic and commercial landmarks.
These include the Dubai International Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and various multinational corporations, banks, investment companies, hotels, and entertainment facilities.
The road is seen as a key arterial route in the city, serving as a primary path for business and daily commuting.
RTA Traffic and Roads Agency traffic director Ahmed Al Khzaimy said: “RTA remains committed to enhancing traffic flow across Dubai, particularly on Sheikh Zayed Road. Through innovative enhancements and traffic solutions, we aim to provide a seamless and safe travel experience for all motorists and road users across the emirate.”
RTA’s recent work includes expanding the service road adjacent to the Financial Centre Metro Station towards Abu Dhabi.
The number of lanes has been increased from three to four, which has enhanced the road’s capacity by 25%.
This expansion allows the road to accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour, a significant increase from the previous 2,400 vehicles.
Additionally, RTA has improved the traffic merging distance between Al Khail Road and Financial Centre Street in the Dubai-bound direction.
Al Khzaimy claimed this has resulted in reduced congestion and improved service levels, cutting journey time along Sheikh Zayed Road by 25% from four minutes to three minutes, ensuring smoother and more efficient traffic flow.
Last month, RTA awarded a contract for the development of intersections on Al Qudra Road in the city.
