The University of Glasgow in Scotland, UK, has initiated a £12.6m ($15.81m) investment project to upgrade the Library Annexe with Robertson Construction Central West at the helm of design and construction.
This initiative is part of the university’s comprehensive modernisation programme, aimed at enhancing the facility’s energy efficiency and technical standards.
The exterior of the Library Annexe, a structure dating back to the 1980s, will undergo a complete renewal.
This will involve replacing the roof coverings and wall cladding with contemporary materials designed to boost energy efficiency. Additionally, new double-glazed windows with superior insulation properties will be installed to further the building’s energy-saving measures.
Internally, the refurbishment will transform the Library Annexe into a more pleasant environment for both students and staff.
The improvements will address ventilation, heating, and cooling systems, and will also increase the penetration of natural light within the building.

By GlobalDataTo accommodate modern study habits, the availability of power outlets will be significantly expanded across the facility.
To ensure that the library remains functional during the upgrade, the work is scheduled during off-peak hours to minimise inconvenience to users.
Soundproof barriers will be erected in certain areas to mitigate the noise generated by the ongoing construction activities.
Robertson Construction Central West, which was first selected for the University of Glasgow construction framework agreement in 2016, has a history of delivering refurbishments for the institution, including work on the James Watt Building and the Grade A-listed Joseph Black Building.
In May this year, Robertson was reappointed to the framework for the third consecutive time.
Robertson Construction Central West regional managing director Andy McLinden said: “This project represents a significant step in our ongoing partnership with the University of Glasgow. It involves the integration of advanced building technologies to enhance energy performance and user comfort.
“The modernisation of the Library Annexe will address both the practical needs of the students and staff who rely on the space while ensuring the building is futureproofed for years to come.”
In a related development, the University of Glasgow announced in October 2024 that the construction of the Keystone building, a new facility dedicated to learning, teaching, and research, will commence.
