Robertson and Balfour Beatty have been named as the preferred contractors for the construction of five new educational facilities as part of the North Schools Programme in Scotland.

This initiative is a collaborative effort involving five local authorities in northern Scotland, aimed at enhancing the region’s learning infrastructure.

Hub North Scotland chief executive Richard Park said: “This is a key moment for the North Schools Programme in reaching the preferred bidder stage for our main contractors. A huge amount of work has already been undertaken by our local authority partners and our supply chain in progressing these projects.

“This collaboration allowed our partners to share best practice, knowledge and resources to achieve the programme goals and also helped streamline key elements which will bring cost, time and quality benefits in delivering these projects.”

Robertson is set to undertake the development of four schools, which include the brand-new Hazelhead Campus and the upgraded St Peters Roman Catholic School for Aberdeen City Council, the new Brae Campus for Shetland Islands Council, and the Mull 2-18 Campus for Argyll and Bute Council.

Collectively, these projects will serve 2,720 pupils and are valued at £232.5m ($284.12m).

Significant financial support for the Hazelhead, Brae, and Mull projects is being provided through the Scottish Government’s Learning Estate Investment Programme Phase 3 (LEIP3).

Robertson Group chief executive officer Elliot Robertson said: “Bringing together local authorities, the pioneering hub North Schools Programme champions experience, best practice and quality while supporting each local authority’s ambitious plans to invest in education and the prosperity of future generations.”

On the other hand, Balfour Beatty has been entrusted with the construction of the new Forres Academy for Moray Council.

The academy, which was chosen for funding under the Scottish Government’s LEIP in October 2023, is scheduled to welcome 1,120 pupils by mid-2028.

In total, the five projects are set to deliver new and refurbished educational buildings for 3,840 pupils.
