The Australian federal government and New South Wales (NSW) state government have jointly committed A$1.1bn ($697.9m) to advance major road upgrade projects within Sydney’s North West region.
This investment aims to alleviate congestion, reduce travel times, and enhance safety for motorists in the region.
The 50/50 joint investment encompasses the A$150m Bandon Road upgrade, the A$440m Garfield Road East corridor upgrade, and the A$520m Richmond Road upgrade.
Design and consulting company Arup Australia has been awarded the contract for the conceptual design work of the Bandon Road upgrade, marking a step forward for the project.
New artist impression images have been released, showcasing the first stage of this upgrade.
The images include a new car park for Vineyard Train Station, intersection and safety improvements, and a new bus stop.
The complete project will provide two additional lanes, an underpass at the existing rail crossing, and a new connector road between Windsor Road and Richmond Road.
Community consultation on the proposed Bandon Road design will commence next week (24 March) and conclude on 6 April 2025.
The Richmond Road upgrade is also progressing, with design and construction tenders requested for the section between the M7 road and Townson Road.
The upgrade will expand the road from four to six lanes, with early work expected to begin in the first half of 2026.
Moreover, the Garfield Road East Project is moving ahead, with a contract for design work to be awarded soon, and a new artist impression showing the planned upgrades to the Piccadilly Street intersection.
The project will widen a 3.4km stretch of Garfield Road East from two to four lanes.
With the North West Sydney region’s population projected to grow by approximately 300,000 over the coming years, reaching 1.1 million by 2036, these road upgrades are seen as critical to supporting the infrastructure needs of the expanding communities in Blacktown, Hawkesbury, and The Hills Shire districts.
Australian Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said: “These are important upgrades that are delivering safer and more efficient road connections for residents in North West Sydney.
“The north-west of Sydney is growing quickly, and the Australian Government is supporting that growth with our A$555m contribution to these projects.”
Earlier this month, the NSW Government stepped up efforts for the upgrade on the Hume Highway at Marulan, as part of a A$35m investment aimed at enhancing the safety of the highway corridor.
