Spanish fossil fuel company Repsol has announced its plans to construct an advanced biofuels production plant at its Cartagena refinery in Spain.

Claimed to the first facility of its kind in Spain, it involves an investment of €188m and will include commissioning of a hydrogen plant, which will fuel a new hydro treatment facility that will be equipped with advance technology.

Slated to be operational in 2023, the new plant is expected to produce approximately 250,000 tonnes of advanced biofuels including hydrobiodiesel, biojet, bionaphtha, and biopropane.

It will produce the advanced biofuels from recycled raw materials for use in aircraft, trucks, or cars.

Repsol said that the new production plant is part of its commitment to the circular economy and its aim of achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The advanced biofuels produced at the new facility will allow to reduce approximately 900,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

The construction and commissioning of the plant is planned to be completed in different phases with the support from auxiliary companies.

Furthermore, it is estimated to require approximately 1,000 professionals from diverse fields to carry out the work.
Repsol CEO Josu Jon Imaz said: “With this initiative, we at Repsol are decisively promoting a new technological route that will be key in our path towards carbon neutrality.

“It is added to the projects we have already implemented in energy efficiency, low-emissions electricity generation, renewable hydrogen, circular economy, synthetic fuels, and CO2 capture, use, and storage, among others.”
