Augustana University has announced that the renovation of its new campus, ‘green’ is expected to be complete in 2023.
The renovation project, which is currently underway, is part of a $50m housing plan that is focused on new and improved facilities to serve the educational and holistic needs of the students and staff at the university.
Located in the centre of the campus, the green will include a 100-yard football field with lights, along with seating areas and charging stations. The Viking Marching Band can utilise the football field for practice.
The project also includes the construction of an amphitheatre-style outdoor classroom and relocation of a retention pond with a fountain.
The outdoor classroom and seating areas will be used as a larger gathering space for seminars, concerts, meetings, classes, and reunions.
The renovated green will be used for intramural sports such as frisbee golf, spikeball, softball, and flag football.

By GlobalDataAugustana Recreational (Rec) Services director Mark Hecht said: “Our intramural program and sport clubs have been without an outdoor play space for years, so we are very excited to see the field in the campus green be part of the renovation project.
“As exciting as the physical play space is for our flag football program and sport clubs, it’s even more exciting that this area will have lights.”
Situated on the south side of the green, the new outdoor classroom will be Augustana’s second, with the first one built in 2019.
The green’s retention pond will be relocated to prevent flooding and its new location will be closer to Bergsaker Hall along 33rd Street.
