The Redding Rancheria, a federally recognised tribe, has commenced the construction of a new 190,000ft² health village, located in South Redding, California, US.
This project, forming a part of the multiyear partnership with LPA Design Studios, aims to create a health and wellness facility that addresses the longstanding challenges faced by indigenous tribes.
The three-storey Redding Rancheria Tribal Health Village is expected to become the largest of its kind in the state.
Redding Rancheria Tribal Health System executive director of health services Glen Hayward said: “This health village is not just about treatment; it’s about transformation.
“It will focus on whole-body wellness, integrated nutrition, behavioural health and preventative care.”
The project is claimed to represent a significant advancement in enhancing the health of the Pit River, Wintu, and Yana peoples’ descendants.
The health and recreation centre will provide comprehensive care and emphasise whole-person health, a concept that is claimed to be seldom seen in tribal communities.
LPA, a multidiscipline company with over 500 professionals across California and Texas, has collaborated closely with Redding Rancheria to design a facility that aligns with the tribe’s proactive stance on addressing its members’ challenges.
The health and wellness village, expected to open in 2027, will adopt a wide-ranging approach to boost community wellness and improve long-term patient outcomes.
LPA director of healthcare Muhsin Lihony said: “Redding Rancheria is taking a holistic approach to addressing the historical challenges facing the health and success of Native Americans.”
“This new facility is designed as a resource for generations, reflecting Redding Rancheria’s unique needs and heritage.”
The South Redding facility will cater to primary care, behavioural health, and dentistry, and will also offer community health, physical therapy, fitness training, senior nutrition, and rehab services.
It will feature both indoor and outdoor natatoriums, a multipurpose gymnasium, an indoor running track, and studios for yoga and fitness classes.
Additionally, the facility will house a demonstration kitchen for nutrition classes and meal preparation education.
Community spaces will facilitate programmes on parenting and behavioural health/addiction counselling. Embracing a holistic wellness approach, doctors at the facility will be able to prescribe activities such as exercise classes, swimming, and yoga.
The design process was a collective effort among LPA’s various practices, incorporating the tribe’s values and culture.
The landscape architecture team contributed to the development of active outdoor environments, walking trails, an indoor-outdoor auditorium, and community gardens while the Sport + Rec team integrated aquatic and recreational elements into the project’s design.
