RATIO Architects has been chosen to lead the design process for an expanded communications building on the Carbondale campus of Southern Illinois University in the US.
The Illinois Capital Development Board has issued $8.3m for the preliminary design of this $84.7m project.
It is being financed by funds from the Rebuild Illinois capital construction project, which was approved in 2019 by the Legislature and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
The project will include redesigning the current 230,000ft² building and enlarging it by adding 60,000ft².
The extra space will allow for new classrooms, a flexible auditorium, laboratories, and digital post-production facilities at the university’s communication department.
In addition, it will enable media convergence due to a combined broadcast-print newsroom.
