Portland State University (PSU) has announced the start of construction of its Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design building in Oregon, US. 

Set to open in late 2026, the 98,000ft² facility will foster interdisciplinary creative thinking and learning within the university. 

The Schnitzer School includes acclaimed programmes in graphic design and art practice.  

More than 60% of the school’s current class comprises students who identify as varying ethnicities.

PSU College of the Arts dean Leroy Bynum Jr said: “The new light-filled classrooms, studios and galleries will provide inspiring places for students, faculty and the public to engage in art experiences, and allow our school to strengthen and expand programmes at the intersection of industry, sustainability, culture and creative practice.”

Lever Architecture designed the project, which prioritises accessibility and educational equity, with student leaders having been actively involved in the design process. 

Meanwhile, Swinerton Construction is responsible for the building process.  

PSU Planning, Construction and Real Estate associate vice-president Jason Franklin said: “We’re proud of this building not just for what it will ultimately make possible for students but for the meaningful way in which diverse student voices helped shape its design.” 

The capital project has been financially underpinned by $81.6m in public bonds sanctioned by the Oregon Legislature, supplemented by a targeted $8.7m from private philanthropy.
