Wales’ Newport is poised for a significant shift towards sustainable travel as proposals for enhancing the city centre’s transport infrastructure progress.

The plans outline a series of upgrades to Newport’s railway station, Queensway, and the Old Green roundabout.

These upgrades aim to transform Newport railway station into a central hub for eco-friendly travel options.

Meanwhile, the Old Green roundabout project will involve highway revisions, including priority bus lanes and streamlined active travel routes for all users.

Additionally, opportunities to enhance the public realm, including surrounding Newport Castle areas, will be considered.

The South East Wales Transport Commission’s key recommendations are being realised through the Burns Delivery Unit (BDU).

The BDU, spearheaded by Transport for Wales in partnership with the Welsh Government and local councils, is creating a greener travel network in south-east Wales.

A public consultation conducted in early 2023 garnered over 2,400 responses, the insights from which have been compiled into a detailed report.

Following the consultation, the BDU’s partners say they have been refining the proposals to better align with public feedback and practicality tests.

The next phase will involve ongoing engagement with stakeholders and residents regarding the plans, as well as securing formal government funding for the implementation of these sustainable travel improvements.

Newport City Council’s cabinet member for infrastructure and assets councillor Rhian Howells said: “Old Green is a vital part of the travel network in Newport and it is important that we get things right.

“Should these proposals go ahead, they will make it easier for people to get around Newport and will better link Newport Castle with the city centre.”

“The informative feedback we have received from people has allowed us to refine the plans, shaping them to better serve people’s needs.”
