Sweden’s Uppsala Municipality has contracted construction and civil engineering firm Peab to build Tullgarn Bridge over Fyris River.
The contract is valued at up to $17.29m (SEK157m).

A part of the infrastructure expansion in Uppsala, Tullgarn Bridge is a key development underway in the south side of the city.
It will serve as a connection to the residential areas in Kungsängen with Studenternas IP, a multi-use stadium, the city park ‘Stadsträdgården’, and Uppsala University Hospital.
It is the third moveable bridge to be built by Peab for Uppsala Municipality, following Vind Bridge and Flottsund Bridge.
Peab product manager Thomas Larsson said: “We look forward to working together with Uppsala Municipality once again and starting construction of Tullgarn Bridge.

According to the company, Tullgarn Bridge will be constructed as a bascule bridge over Fyris River.
It will have connecting roads, as well as pedestrian and bicycle paths.
With a total of 60m in length, Tullgarn Bridge will have one car lane in each direction. It will also a four metre wide pedestrian and bicycle path on its sides.
It will feature a special design where the leaf that lifts will be constructed completely in corten steel.
This linking leaf will be built in concrete though in a corten form. Furthermore, abutments will be clad in granite.
According to the company, the vertical lift will be ‘unusual’ as it would open and close by ‘rope machinery in one of the bridge supports’.
Uppsala Municipality project manager Stefan Bergerstam said: “Now that the procurement process is over we’re entering the next stage of the project which is building Tullgarn Bridge and the connecting streets.
“The bridge also enables reducing the traffic in parts of the city center. For Uppsala Municipality Tullgarn Bridge and its design will create a landmark in the city.”
Peab noted that the bridge planning will commence immediately, with construction scheduled to begin in January next year.
Completion of Tullgarn Bridge is expected in 2023.
