Peab, a Nordic builder, has been awarded a Skr255m ($22.65m) contract to construct Björkås School in Ulricehamn, Sweden, by Ulricehamn Municipality.

The school will accommodate 525 students and include 21 classrooms and an area for 30 students with special needs.

The project will also feature seven home bases, each with three classrooms, six group rooms, a common area, and a staff workroom.

Peab region manager Andreas D’Arienzo said: “Peab is proud to have been entrusted by Ulricehamn Municipality to build Björkås School. We have extensive experience in building schools and have built many locally in recent years.

“We look forward to working together to create an inspiring environment that contributes to education, well-being and development.”

The schoolyard, covering 37,000m², will integrate with the surrounding natural environment, preserving a forest area to enhance the educational setting.

The new school, along with its connected buildings, will cover a total area of 10,000m². The buildings will feature predominantly wooden facades in yellow and dark green pine.

The school will have three storeys, with educational spaces complemented by a full-sized sports arena with bleachers, a dining room with a commercial kitchen, and specialised rooms for crafts, music, economics, and media.

Ulricehamn Municipality project manager Johan Abrahamsson said: “We are pleased to have chosen Peab. It is a good company with extensive experience and references from similar projects.”

The project is being registered in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2024 and is scheduled for completion in early 2027.

In recent years, Peab has constructed Särla School in Borås, Noltorp School in Alingsås, and Lindblad School in Vårgårda, all located in the Södra Älvsborg area of Sweden.

Furthermore, Peab has been awarded a contract to build new barracks in Visby, Gotland, for the Swedish Fortifications Agency, valued at Skr207m.

The 6,500m² barracks will be located within the Tofta Garrison and will include dormitories, changing rooms, classrooms, storage spaces, and relaxation areas.

The facility will support the Swedish Armed Forces’ training needs for recruits.

The project work will begin this month and is expected to be finished by May 2026, with the order scheduled for registration by Peab in Q1 2025.
