Peab has received a commission from Skellefteå Municipality to construct the Arctic Center of Energy (ACE) in Skellefteå, Sweden.

The contract is valued at Skr390m ($36.79m). The project will be recorded as an order in the company’s second quarter of 2024.

The ACE aims to be a leading competence centre focused on advancing the electrification of society.

Located on the university campus in Skellefteå, the project, referred to as Campus ACE, will feature a building with a cross-laminated timber frame.

Peab region manager Susanne Hallberg said: “I’m proud that we can contribute with our expertise in sustainable construction and reuse and start work on Campus ACE which will be key in the research on the very important electrification of society.”

The project targets high standards for energy efficiency, sustainability, and the reuse of various materials.

The facility will incorporate solar panels and wind turbines on its roof.

The energy generated will be stored in a battery storage system to power the building’s central functions during power outages. Rainwater will be collected and used for flushing public toilets.

Materials for reuse will be sourced locally, including from the Skellefteå Hospital, which is currently undergoing extensive renovations and construction.

Items such as windows, lighting fixtures, interior doors, washbasins, stair railings, and limestone from existing floors will be repurposed to create new terrazzo floors. The majority of the facade will be made from recycled composite material.

Skellefteå Municipality project manager Kenneth Lindén said: “Our sustainability ambitions as the customer are very high and the goal of this project is to take the next step in sustainable and circular construction.”

The project aims for certification under Miljöbyggnad Gold 4.0 and NollCO2, which includes stringent material selection and a requirement for net-zero carbon emissions.

This turnkey contract will construction commence this month, with completion anticipated in May 2027.

Earlier this week, the company won a road and railroad project in Sweden.
