The New South Wales (NSW) Government of Australia has announced the commencement of the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 construction.

The state’s 2024-25 Budget allocates A$2bn ($1.33bn) to the project.

The investment in the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 construction comes after the project received NSW Planning Approval and Federal Environmental Approval.

This transport initiative is set to provide reliable public transport for the state’s growing communities such as Wentworth Point.

The 12km route will connect the Parramatta central business district (CBD) to Sydney Olympic Park through various suburbs, including Camellia and Rydalmere.

It will feature 14 new stops, three river crossings, and 8.5km of paths for walking and cycling.

Passengers will be able to travel in approximately 30 minutes from Sydney Olympic Park to Camellia, with an additional seven minutes to reach the Parramatta CBD.

Construction will be carried out in phases, with the initial phase starting later this year on a new 320m bridge over the Parramatta River.

The first stage of the Parramatta Light Rail project is nearing completion, with testing underway and services expected to commence soon.

This will cater to the transportation needs of tens of thousands of commuters.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said: “Stage 2 will directly link Parramatta to the Sydney Olympic Park precinct residents in Parramatta to the Sydney Olympic Park precinct.

“The light rail’s forecast to carry 28,000 passengers every day by 2026. That’s a game-changer for communities around Parramatta – connecting venues, schools, shops and people for decades to come.”
