Nordic construction company NYAB has been awarded a Skr144m ($14.1m) contract by the Swedish Transport Administration to construct the initial segment of the North Bothnia Line.

The project is set to commence next month and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

NYAB will undertake the construction of the first 12km stretch of the North Bothnia Line, which will connect the Umeå freight yard to Sundbäck in the Umeå municipality.

This section marks the beginning of the wider 270km coastal railway line between Umeå and Luleå, designed for fast and sustainable transport.

The contract encompasses not only track work but also includes electrical installations, telecommunications, and cable laying.

NYAB Infrastructure Business Area manager Mattias Broström said: “I am pleased that NYAB has been entrusted to begin the construction of the North Bothnia Line. The project fits well with our competencies, and we look forward to continuing our good cooperation with the Swedish Transport Administration and contributing to the infrastructure of the region and all of Sweden.

“The North Bothnia Line is a wide-ranging project in a region with great potential, and we see good opportunities to further intensify our investments in the area in the future.”

NYAB specialises in engineering, construction, and maintenance within the public and private sectors. The company has recently expanded its operations, extending its reach beyond Sweden and Finland to include Norway and other global regions.

Earlier this month, the company was awarded a Skr164m contract by Umeå Hamn AB for the redevelopment of the Northern Quay at the Port of Umeå.
