Construction of the first town centre at Green Square, Sydney, New South Wales, is expected to begin by the end of this year.
Green Square Town Centre will be built over 14ha and is part of the 280ha Green Square redevelopment area, which includes land in five suburbs.
The Green Square Consortium group comprises UrbanGrowth NSW, Mirvac and Leighton Contractors, who will build 40% of the town centre.
The town centre will feature ten major new buildings ranging from three to 28 floors that comprise 3,700 apartments. The project will create 8,500 new jobs.
In support of the project, the City of Sydney will build roads, drainage and community facilities, including a library, public plaza and an aquatic centre and sports park, with an investment of $440m.
It has entered into planning agreements with developers to fund the public infrastructure.

By GlobalDataThe city is working with the New South Wales Government, Sydney Water and UrbanGrowth, and has appointed Danish architect Jan Gehl to advise on the project.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said that Green Square is Australia’s biggest urban renewal project and the city is working to ensure it’s a beautiful, sustainable and well-functioning neighbourhood.
"Once it’s complete it will completely transform the southern part of our city," Moore said.
"Now we have enlisted world-renowned urban designer Jan Gehl to provide advice on how we can make sure the public areas and facilities we are building complement the apartments, offices and shops the private sector is constructing."
The Green Square Town Centre is expected to be completed by 2030.
As part of the project, Crown Group has unveiled the design for a 20-storey tower designed by Koichi Takada Architects, which will feature 416 apartments and 5,000m² of retail and restaurant space.
The company will seek approval for the project in May, with work expected to commence early next year.
