Newnham College

Newnham College has contracted UK-based practice Walters & Cohen Architects to design the initial phase of a project to deliver inspiring accommodation for students.

The latest appointment follows Walters & Cohen winning a two-stage design competition by defeating a shortlist of eight, supervised by Colander Associates.

Newnham College principal Dame Carol Black said: ‘We were looking for a practice which would design a wonderful and uplifting piece of architecture that will add to the glorious setting that is Newnham College.

"The standard of the competition was remarkably high but the final decision was unanimous and we were delighted to name Walters & Cohen Architects as the winner."

"About 75 en-suite bedrooms will be built for the Newnham’s growing graduate community in the new building."

With the planning application set for submission by mid-2015, about 75 en-suite bedrooms will be built for the Newnham’s growing graduate community in the new building.

Work under the project is expected to be commenced the following summer.

The new building is intended to be sympathetic to the existing structures, especially those designed by Victorian architect Basil Champneys, and the gardens.

Walters & Cohen director Cindy Walters said: "During the two stages of the competition, the college placed great emphasis on the ability to work collaboratively as much as they did design quality; these are fundamental in the creation of buildings that will reflect the ethos, values and culture of Newnham.

"We are absolutely delighted to win this important project and look forward to working with the college on excellent new accommodation that complements their beautiful estate."
