Volker Staal en Funderingen (VSF), a subsidiary of VolkerWessels, has secured a contract to carry out the underground expansion works of the Paleis Het Loo museum in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.

Renovation and refurbishment works at the former royal palace will take place over the next few years.

VSF won the contract for the underground concrete construction pits, structures and auxiliary structures, and new foundations.

The company will construct a 10m-deep pit with an area of nearly 4,500m², including anchoring 4,000m³ of steel fibre-reinforced underwater concrete using around 400 GEWI piles.

The anchored pit walls are 400m-long and will be installed around the whole courtyard and underneath four sections of the existing monumental buildings.

VSF’s complete job will involve the excavation of around 45,000m³ of royal soil.

"Renovation and refurbishment works at the former royal palace will take place over the next few years."

As part of the underground expansion, the wings of the existing palace will be connected to the main building, the Corps de Logis.

Furthermore, a new spacious entrance area and new exhibition rooms will be added, creating an ensemble with the palace, the gardens, the exhibition rooms, the Junior Palace for children and the House of Orange.

The expansion will also provide enough space for the permanent collection, as well as temporary exhibitions.

VSF plans to start construction on the underground expansion in January next year, with the reopening expected in 2021.
