Queensland's Government has selected a team led by Cox Architecture to provide a Pandanus tree-inspired design for the construction of a $250m stadium.
Architectural company 9point9 Architects has also been chosen as a part of the team.
Townsville City Council will be providing land and enabling infrastructure for the stadium. The fund the project, the Queensland Government has invested $140m, while the Australian Government has made an investment of $100m.
Named The North Queensland Stadium, the project will also be supported by the National Rugby League, which will offer $10m to the total project budget.
Queensland's acting premier Curtis Pitt said: “The Pandanus-inspired roof creates a suitably iconic shape for North Queensland but is also practical, covering 80% of the stadium’s 25,000 seats and designed to resist cyclonic wind conditions.
“Cox Architecture’s genuine local input and partnership is in line with one of the Palaszczuk Government’s key objectives for this project, local jobs, business, and training opportunities.”

Townsville's mayor Jenny Hill said: “The strong emphasis on the use of local contractors is proof of the region’s wealth of talent and skills and had been pivotal in ensuring the design reflected the North Queensland spirit and conditions.”
Concept designs provided by Cox Architecture include corporate facilities, permanent concessions, and modern information technology (IT) facilities, as well as an open grassed terrace and arrival plazas.
The design also features sports lighting installed into the stand roofing and stormwater run-off management to protect the water quality of Ross Creek.
Cox Architecture has also made the design environmentally sustainable with options for future developments on the site.
