Olympic Park

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London has re-opened following the redevelopment of the south section of the park.

Redevelopment of the 560 acre park included adding new landscaped parklands, waterways and an adventure playground featuring swings, rope bridge and activity zones.

The park will also feature a tree-lined promenade with a globe lighting system, four themed walking trails, interactive water fountains as well as mini gardens representing different climatic regions, including South Africa, the Americas and the Mediterranean.

The London Legacy Development (LLD) is leading the park redevelopment and plans to make it into a multi-use venue.

Currently, the LLD is planning to build a new arts and cultural centre in the park, in cooperation with University College London and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

LLD chief executive Dennis Hone said that in the 18 months since the end of the Olympic Games, a new park for London has been created with beautiful parklands and waterways and world-class sporting facilities.

"The Olympic Park was a huge hit with spectators in 2012, but now countless thousands more will get a chance to see how it has been transformed."

"We want people to come and enjoy this new destination, whether they are reliving the memories of the golden summer of 2012 or experiencing it for the first time," Hone said.

There are also plans to build up to 10,000 new homes, including more than 2,800 in the former Olympic Village, for which planning permission has already been granted.

The Lee Valley VeloPark was opened to the public on 31 March, while the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre is scheduled to open in June.

Olympic Delivery Authority chairman Sir John Armitt said: "The Olympic Park was a huge hit with spectators in 2012, but now countless thousands more will get a chance to see how it has been transformed for generations to come to use and enjoy; walking, relaxing, seeing the sights, or having a picnic, as well as playing and watching sport in four world-class venues."
