Qatar Museums has launched an international competition to appoint an architect to convert industrial buildings into art spaces.
A new ‘Art Mill’ will be developed on a waterfront site across the Doha Bay from the IM Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art. It will also be near the Jean Nouvel’s National Museum of Qatar, which is currently under construction.

The competition is being organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants, reports The Art Newspaper.
Announcement of the winning architect is expected to be early next year, followed by the initiation of works in 2017.
The detailed brief and budget have not yet been confirmed.
According to the competition brief, the project will convert a vast flour mill and its numerous grain silos into art spaces to house Qatar Museums’ various collections.

By GlobalDataPortions of the mill’s internal spaces have a strong character, and many feature high ceilings and large floor areas, the newspaper reported.
In addition to collections, the Art Mill will offer 80,000m² of house galleries and exhibition space.
The chosen architect will also be responsible for constructing a conservation centre and allotting spaces for museum storage, education, conference and events, in order ‘to match the diversity of the collection’.
