Manchester City Council has approved portion of a £1bn, ten year transformation plan to improve amenities at Manchester airport, UK.

The Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (MAN-TP) features a series of 60 enhancements, which seek to provide improved facilities to passengers travel through it.

The programme includes destruction of Terminal 1 and upgrading Terminal 2, modernisation of several services including new baggage handling facilities, alterations and expansion of the existing terminal, new piers and multi-storey car parking.

A number of contractors such as Beijing Construction and Engineering Group, Balfour Beatty, Kier, Laing O’Rourke and Vinci are said to have evinced their interest in bidding for the project, reports Construction Enquirer.

Selected contractors have submitted initial tenders in a two-phase bid process to construct the main Terminal 2.

Manchester Airport Transformation Programme director Brad Miller said: "Everyone at Manchester Airport is delighted that a significant piece of our £1bn transformation programme has been given planning consent.

Global design, engineering and management consulting company Arcadis is project managing the plan and Jacobs Engineering Group will provide multidisciplinary engineering and certain architectural services for various amenities such as terminal, piers, airfield, multi-level car parks and surface access facilities.

According to a report of Bdaily, the MAN-TP covers upgrades to Terminal 3, in which new bigger airside transfer services and a new security hall will be included.

Additionally, the expansion aims to generate space for 50 food and retail businesses.
