Work has commenced on a bridge replacement project on New York State Thruway (Interstate 90/I-90) in the Village of Whitesboro, Oneida County, US, with an investment of $9.3m.

Tioga Construction of Herkimer has been appointed as the contractor through a competitive bidding process, with the project’s conclusion anticipated by the end of 2026.

The bridge spans approximately 150ft and services more than 23,000 vehicles daily.

Constructed in 1955, the bridge at milepost 238.22 between exit 31 and exit 32 is part of the 75% of throughway bridges that have surpassed 60 years of service.

New York governor Kathy Hochul said: “New York State remains committed to developing a modern and resilient infrastructure system that aims to improve the quality of life for residents and travellers alike.

“The Thruway Authority’s investments throughout the state are focused towards modernising and enhancing the 70-year-old Thruway system, as well as job creation and boosting local economies that depend on safe, reliable roads to reach their destinations.”

To minimise impact on traffic, the project will unfold in three stages, ensuring the flow of vehicles on both the throughway and Oriskany Boulevard (Route 69).

It will see the replacement of the bridge structure and the reconstruction of more than 17,000ft² of the bridge deck and highway approaches.

The initial phase, currently in progress, involves the preparation of median crossover areas around the bridge, setting the stage for construction activities set for 2025.

During the second stage, westbound traffic on I-90 will be redirected onto the eastbound lanes to allow for the dismantling and reconstruction of the westbound structure.

In 2026, the third stage will commence, with eastbound traffic shifting onto the newly constructed westbound bridge, enabling the replacement of the eastbound bridge.

The new bridge will feature metalised girders and structural steel to enhance durability by preventing rust and corrosion.
