Network Rail has unveiled proposals for significant upgrades at Manchester Oxford Road Station in the UK as part of the station’s remodelling scheme.

The public consultation, which opened today (20 January), seeks feedback on plans to extend platforms, enhance track and signalling systems, and construct a new footbridge with lifts.

The outline proposals suggest reconfiguring the platform layout to three platforms, each capable of accommodating longer trains.

The two extended through platforms will handle eight-car trains while a new turn-back platform will cater to six-car trains, increasing capacity by two cars per platform.

The project aims to alleviate congestion by introducing track layout and signalling improvements, which will eliminate conflicting train movements. Additionally, over 900m of new track will be laid, and overhead line equipment will be upgraded.

Accessibility improvements are a cornerstone of the scheme, with plans for a new footbridge providing ample space for passenger movement and lifts for step-free platform access. Platform enhancements include widening and resurfacing, as well as upgrading existing lifts.

Key benefits highlighted include an additional 120 seats on services at the station, increased reliability across the regional network with the capacity for 14 trains per hour, and a more accessible and welcoming station environment.

The platform extensions will also complement other network upgrades such as the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

The design of the footbridge and other station elements takes into account the historical context of the area, including the Grade II listed station building and nearby heritage structures on Whitworth Street and Oxford Road.

Stakeholders are encouraged to provide feedback on various aspects of the scheme, including its design, construction, and potential impacts on the rail network, environment, and community.

The initial consultation period will conclude on 28 February, with a second round focusing on environmental and construction details expected before the end of the year.

Following the consultations, Network Rail plans to submit the necessary applications to commence construction in 2026.

Network Rail senior project lead Pete Winters said: “The Manchester Oxford Road Remodelling Scheme consultation is an opportunity for the public to hear about our exciting plans for the station, which include platform, track and signalling upgrades, alongside improvements to station accessibility.

“We want to bring all station users, as well as the local community with us on the journey of improving this important station. I urge the local community and station users to let us know their thoughts so that they can be taken into account as the designs progress.”

Manchester City Council leader and councillor Bev Craig said: “We have said for a long time that Oxford Road Station is in need of a range of improvements from easing the congestion, increasing capacity, improving reliability and ensuring that the station is accessible for all commuters.”

“This consultation will be a positive step in achieving those goals and ensuring that the needs of the tens of thousands of people who travel through Oxford Road on a daily basis are being met.
