Nordic construction company NCC has been awarded a contract by the City of Akaa (Ackas) to construct the Toijala Primary School, located south of Tampere, Finland.

The contract, valued at approximately Skr150m ($13.7m), follows a year of planning and design, with the necessary local plan and building permit now in place.

Covering an area of about 4,000m², the new educational facility will accommodate around 300 students from preschool to grade six across its three-storey structure.

The project’s construction will prioritise low energy consumption, with the goal of achieving the Finnish YL four-star environmental classification.

The commencement of the school’s construction is scheduled for next month, with an anticipated completion date in late 2026.

This turnkey contract will be registered in the NCC Building Nordics business area in the first quarter of 2025.

Akaa mayor Antti Peltola said: “It is gratifying that we can start the construction now when we have an approved local plan and a building permit in place. The new school will make the area more attractive and become an important part of our new school network.”

NCC Building Nordics unit manager Petri Moksén said: “We’ve had a very good collaboration with the city of Ackas from an early start and have planned the project thoroughly. We are now ready to start the construction.”

In addition to this Finnish project, NCC has recently been entrusted with a Skr600m contract to build a new school and sports hall for Tyresö Municipality, located on the outskirts of Stockholm, Sweden.

Furthermore, last month, NCC was awarded two sustainable construction ventures in central Uppsala, Sweden.
