Region Stockholm has commissioned NCC to expand the subway depot in Högdalen, south of Stockholm, Sweden.

The contract carries a value of around SEK800m ($90.4m), which will be registered in the fourth quarter of 2020 in the NCC Building Sweden business area.

The construction contract will be undertaken in collaboration with NCC Infrastructure.

As per the contract, NCC is tasked to expand the existing depot in Högdalen to make way for the new trains that will be required when the subway network expands.

The new trains on the Green and Blue line will be served by the new depot.

NCC Building Sweden head Henrik Landelius said: “NCC has constructed several depots around Sweden, which has provided us with solid know-how and experience in the field.

“Collaboration is vital to the success of these projects, since subway operations and the rail operator’s services take place 24/7 and cannot be disrupted by construction work. We look forward to playing a part in the expansion of the subway in Stockholm.”

The current depot will be expanded southward at the ground level to make space for cleaning bays, graffiti, a garage, sanitation bay and new parking bays.

A total of seven buildings will be constructed at the depot location.

Besides construction, the work will also include groundwork, pipe and duct diversion.

The expansion project will increase the capacity of the depot to 40 trains above ground from the existing 28 parking bays.

The buildings in the depot will be designed in uniform, simple and functional style. The facade will be coloured brightly with a graffiti-resistant coating.

Planning of the project is expected to begin immediately, and the depot is expected to be completed by autumn 2025.
