NCC has been awarded a contract worth approximately Skr600m ($54.9m) to construct a new school with an accompanying sports hall for Tyresö Municipality, just outside Stockholm, Sweden.

The turnkey project will be executed via a partnering form, marking a significant investment in the region’s educational infrastructure. The contract will be recorded in the NCC Building Sweden business area’s books in the first quarter of 2025.

The project encompasses the demolition of the existing school and the construction of a new educational facility spanning more than 10,000m², which includes three floors plus a basement equipped with a civil defence shelter.

Additionally, a two-level sports hall covering roughly 3,000m² is part of the development plan.

The new Njupkärr School is designed to accommodate up to 550 students, ranging from preschool to Year 6.

NCC and Tyresö Municipality have collaborated closely, with an emphasis on climate-conscious measures.

The dismantling of the current school began in late 2024, with the goal of repurposing significant portions of the structure, including the glulam beams and bricks.

The collected windows and glass sections are intended to be primarily recycled into new window glass and potentially into glass wool.

The construction of the school and aforementioned sports hall is anticipated to reach completion in time for the late-year term of 2027.

NCC Building Sweden head Niklas Sparw said: “The planning process together with Tyresö Municipality has been successful. Our focus has been reduced climate footprint and cost efficiency.”

Tyresö Municipality strategy and projects head Louise Bergman said: “With the new Njupkärr school, we will have a sustainable school for the future and creative learning environments for our youngest Tyresö residents. The school and sports hall will create a vibrant meeting place in the area, with school and sports environments that will be welcoming and safe even outside of school hours.

“We are also proud that we, with this project, can contribute new knowledge and new methods for recycling in the construction sector.”

This initiative follows a similar agreement earlier this year, where NCC and the Finnish city of Turku engaged for the construction of a new school and preschool in the district of Järkälä.
