A partnership between NCC and the Swedish Transport Administration has undertaken a Skr175m ($16.45m) construction contract in Masthuggskajen district, Sweden.

The contract, which is in partnering form, includes decking over the western mouth of the Göta Tunnel and constructing a ventilation tower above an existing culvert.

The tunnel is said to be important for traffic in Gothenburg, but its on- and off-ramps currently pose challenges for accessing the Göta älv River from the city centre.

NCC is responsible for covering these ramps, as well as planning and constructing the ventilation tower’s blower installation, with an option to add a steel facade.

NCC Infrastructure Department head Henrik Gerber said: “NCC has extensive experience with roads, tunnels and complicated facilities, so this assignment suits us very well.

“We have a good partnership with the Swedish Transport Administration, and in addition, we feel at home in the area around Masthuggskajen, where we also developed and built three office buildings.”

Construction of the decking project is scheduled to commence in August 2024.

The entire assignment is expected to commence later this year, with completion anticipated by the first half of 2026.

The project will fall under NCC’s Infrastructure business area, with registration anticipated in the second quarter.

This announcement comes shortly after NCC revealed that the Mariestad correctional facility project in the country is now progressing into the production phase.

The Mariestad correctional facility is an investment by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service to address the growing demand for prison spaces in the country.
