Morgan Sindall has initiated construction on a new Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station at Middlemore Lane in Walsall, England, UK.

Representatives from Morgan Sindall, Walsall Council, infrastructure designer Atkins, construction procurement specialist Pagabo, and more participated in the site’s ground-breaking ceremony.

The initiative, which aligns with national waste management goals, aims to reduce landfill usage and boost recycling rates in the region.

The contract, which Morgan Sindall secured last month, was procured through Pagabo’s Major Works Framework.

Morgan Sindall Construction Midlands area director Richard Fielding said: “It was great to break ground and mark the start of works on the site of this crucial sustainability project together with representatives from Walsall Council, Wardell Armstrong, Atkins Realis, and Pagabo today.

“Delivering key infrastructure for the benefit of local communities is at the heart of what we do at Morgan Sindall, and we’re pleased to be working with Walsall Council to help them achieve their ambition of creating a healthier, cleaner and safer borough for its residents.”

The development will take place on a 6ha site, previously home to McKechnie Brass.

To lay the groundwork for the new facilities, Morgan Sindall has reengineered the site’s soils using lime and cement stabilisation techniques and managed significant surface water challenges.

The Middlemore Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre is designed to handle up to 40,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of waste, featuring 19 bays with two skips each.

The Waste Transfer Station meanwhile, will have the capacity to process up to 125,000tpa of municipal waste and recyclables annually, with additional capacity planned to accommodate future increases in waste volumes.

The project also includes the construction of weighbridges, service yards, ventilation systems, and office and welfare facilities for staff.

Another addition to the site will be a reuse shop with a workshop area, aimed at maximising community benefit and functionality.

Scheduled for completion within 64 weeks, Morgan Sindall is tasked with overseeing all technical design and construction aspects of the project.
