Northumberland County Council in the UK has awarded contracts to civil engineering company Morgan Sindall Infrastructure to commence construction on three new stations in the region.

The new stations along the line are Bedlington, Blyth Bebside, and Seaton Delaval.

Main construction work is said to be progressing quickly, with the station building at Newsham nearing completion in Ashington, with 21km of new track already in place.

The fourth and final subway for the Northumberland line was already built earlier this year in a 100-hour operation.

Bedlington and Bebside each have two platforms, whereas Seaton Delaval has only one. To encourage sustainable travel, each station will now include parking, accessible entry, as well as connections to local cycling and walking routes.

The completed Northumberland line will see stations built at these locations, as well as at Northumberland Park and Newsham. Miles of rail will also be refitted.

Northumberland County Council’s leader Glen Sanderson said: “Each week sees further progress on this fantastic scheme and we’re very pleased to be able to formally award these contracts for the stations to Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.

“Along with the benefits to the economy and boosts to our education and tourism sectors, this line will bring a range of green benefits to support our climate change agenda, helping to reduce congestion and improve air quality on key roads by moving people away from car travel and onto public transport.”

Morgan Sindall’s operations director Pieter Esbach said that nine new local apprenticeships and 53 full-time equivalent jobs have been created as a result of this development.

Esbach added that the company will continue to work with more than 1,600 local school students to “inspire” their future career opportunities.
