Morgan Sindall’s Eastern Counties team has been appointed by East Suffolk Council to deliver a redevelopment project in the heart of Lowestoft, England, UK.

The project, known as Battery Green, will serve as a new cultural and community hub featuring studio space for creative businesses, a restaurant, and a civic square.

This initiative is part of the five transformative regeneration projects in Lowestoft, which received a £24.9m ($32.08m) grant from the UK government’s Towns Fund in 2022.

In 2019, Lowestoft was selected as one of the 100 UK towns to benefit from the government’s £3.6bn Towns Fund.

The government gave final approval to five projects, including the Station Quarter, Culture Quarter, Historic Quarter, Seafront Vision, and the Port Gateway project in 2022.

The Cultural Quarter, soon to be Battery Green, will include enhancements to the Marina Theatre and the transformation of the current Customer Services Centre into a new cultural facility with a dining area.

The former Battery Green multistorey car park will also be redeveloped to offer new leisure activities.

Morgan Sindall Construction, part of Morgan Sindall Group, with its main office in Warwickshire, is set to deliver the construction works at Battery Green, pending contract finalisation.

The technical design phase will commence in collaboration with domestic architect Chaplin Farrant, with construction expected to start in January 2025.

Local company PJ Spillings has already been contracted for the demolition of part of East Suffolk Council’s former Marina Customer Services Centre while Harte Demolitions is scheduled to complete the demolition of the former car park by mid-December 2024.

Battery Green’s completion is anticipated in early 2026.

Other ongoing projects at the site include improvements at Royal Plain, Royal Green, South Quay Wharf, and a new seafront complex at Jubilee Parade.

East Suffolk Council Economic Development and Regeneration cabinet member and councillor Tim Wilson said: “We are pleased to award the construction contract for Battery Green to Morgan Sindall and to see the progression of this exciting multimillion-pound development in the centre of Lowestoft.

“Battery Green will provide residents and visitors with a vibrant new space offering leisure and dining facilities and space for creative businesses.

“Battery Green is just one of several major regeneration projects underway across the town which will attract more visitors and businesses to the area and enhance the town for the benefit of local residents.”
