Montréal and the federal government of Canada have announced the funding for a new modern aquatic sports complex in Montréal-Nord.
The complex, which will be constructed on the site of the former Garon arena, is backed by an investment of C$88m ($61.4m) from the city and an additional C$15m from the federal government.
This development was announced by Emmanuel Dubourg, Member of Parliament for Bourassa; Caroline Bourgeois, mayor of Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles, and Christine Black, borough mayor of Montréal-Nord.
Dubourg said: “The federal government is proud to support the construction of this new sports centre, which will provide modern and accessible facilities to the entire community of Montréal-Nord.
By investing C$15m in this project, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting physical activity, health, and the well-being of all citizens, while contributing to the sustainable development of our infrastructure.”
The funding will facilitate the construction of complex, set to include a double gymnasium, a three-lane walking track, locker rooms, bleachers, and administrative offices for organisations.
The design of the new facility is aiming for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold v4 and BCZ-Design v4 certification.
This certification ensures that the building will have optimal energy efficiency, responsible resource use, and a minimal environmental footprint.
Prior to the confirmation of financial contributions, Montréal had already committed an estimated C$88m for the construction of the site’s pool, which has been in planning for the past two years.
Once construction work is completed, the site’s sports and aquatic facilities will be interconnected, enhancing the community’s infrastructure.
