Philippines-based water services company Manila Water has announced plans to develop a new water treatment plant (WTP) in the East Bay of Laguna Lake, Philippines.

A consortium of ACCIONA, PrimeBMD, and Santa Clara International secured the contract to design and build the facility.

This new plant is expected to have a capacity of 200 million litres per day and will provide an additional potable water supply to Metro Manila’s ‘East Zone’.

The 7.84bn pesos East Bay Phase 2 WT is situated in the barangay of Kabulusan, Pakil, Laguna, and is intended to provide drinking water to an estimated two million residents in Pasig, Pateros, Taguig, and neighbouring municipalities by early 2025.

According to Manila Water senior project manager Byder Nangit, this project is part of the company’s Water Supply Master Plan, which seeks to assure water security within its East Zone.

Upon completion, the project will reduce dependency on the Angat Dam reservoir for water supplies.

This WTP is part of the East Bay Phase 2 Water Supply System Project, which comprises developing a reservoir and a pumping station and installing 60km of pipes with respective diameters of 1,200mm and 1,400mm.

The water from Laguna Lake will be treated by the WTP using a reverse osmosis system.

East Bay’s first project phase was concluded by the second quarter of this year and is already catering to consumers within the municipality of Jalajala.

This plant is anticipated to offer 50 million litres per day of treated water to 390,000 residents within Rizal’s municipalities of Jalajala, Morong, Baras, Cardona, Pililla, and Binangonan.
