BAM has broken ground on the first phase of Kirklees Council’s regeneration project, named Our Cultural Heart, in Huddersfield, UK.  

The project’s initial phase will see the transformation of Huddersfield’s former Queensgate Market into a new food hall and library.

These facilities are designed to open onto a newly created public square, envisioned as a hub for outdoor cultural events and community gatherings. 

BAM preconstruction director Paul Cleminson said: “This is an exciting scheme for Huddersfield that will leave a lasting legacy in the town and we’re delighted to be starting work on site.   

“An important driver for BAM is ensuring our projects positively impact the local community and we want to make sure that this project also leaves a lasting legacy for the people and businesses of Kirklees.”

Kirklees Council has recently submitted revised plans for the second phase of the Our Cultural Heart project.  

This phase will focus on developing a new museum and art gallery within the structure that previously housed the town’s library on Princess Alexandra Walk. 

Earlier in the month, BAM secured a contract worth £800m ($1.7bn) for the subsequent phase of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) West project in the UK.  

This phase, expected to be completed by 2028, forms a part of the larger £2bn TRUWest Alliance contract.
