Kier, a provider of infrastructure services, construction, and property developments, has been selected to undertake the redevelopment of King’s Academy Bay House School in Gosport, Hampshire, England.

The project is a part of the UK’s Department for Education’s (DfE) School Rebuilding Programme.

The renovation involves the installation of 6,862m² of new teaching blocks and the refurbishment of more than 4,000m² of existing teaching space.

New structural elements of the project include the creation of various learning spaces, including science laboratories, art studios, and music rooms.

Designed with a focus on sustainability, the school is expected to operate with net-zero carbon.

Sustainable features such as air-source heat pumps, solar panels, and passive ventilation will be integrated to maintain optimal temperatures without high energy use.

Additional green elements include living roofs and atriums with natural lighting, along with a central courtyard and entrance plaza to create a contemporary educational environment.

The project will also see the installation of new electric vehicle charging points and expanded cycle storage.

The historical aspect of the school, featuring the Grade II-listed Bay House dating back to 1838, will be preserved and incorporated into the new pedestrian entrance.

Kier’s supply chain will undertake repairs to the roof, windows, doors, fascia, and stonework to maintain the heritage of the site.

King’s Academy Trust Hampshire CEO Nick Cross said: “This is a transformational moment for King’s Academy Bay House, its students, staff, and the wider community. The new facilities will provide an inspiring and modern learning environment that reflects our commitment to provide opportunity and success on a global stage for all our students.

“This investment will have a lasting impact, ensuring that generations of students benefit from the very best opportunities.”

This project was procured via DfE’s High Value Band Framework, which is reserved for construction projects valued at over £12m ($15.66m).

The redevelopment is an addition to Kier’s ongoing work in the education sector across the south of England, including projects such as the Livingstone Academy in Bournemouth and Mayfield School in Portsmouth.

Kier is also currently working on educational estate projects at Oak Academy, Bournemouth, Poole College, and the University of Southampton.

Additionally, in February this year, Kier was selected to construct a new £40.7m health building at the University of Salford to accommodate various health courses.
