Healthcare company Kaiser Permanente has unveiled plans to build a new $900m headquarters called The Kaiser Permanente Thrive Center, in Oakland, California, US.
The new building at 2100 Telegraph Avenue will accommodate 7,200 national and Northern California Region employees and physicians who currently work in seven different locations.
The company expects that the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Center will reduce operational costs by over $60m per annum, addressing facilities maintenance, inefficient utility expenses, and increasing commercial real estate leases.
The current vision for the building design includes dedicated space for a health clinic and health education, community meeting spaces, and an arts venue.
Kaiser Permanente expects to start construction on the new building in 2020 and complete this in 2023.
Upon completion of the building’s construction, local developer Lane Partners will acquire existing buildings currently owned by Kaiser Permanente for renovation and commercial use.
The new building will consolidate Kaiser Permanente’s footprint and add to various investments the company made in the Oakland community.
Kaiser Permanente chairman and CEO Bernard Tyson said: “For more than seven decades, Kaiser Permanente has been proud to call Oakland our home, and today we further strengthen our commitment to this incredible city.
“While allowing us to go from seven sites to one and reduce operational costs by more than $60m annually, which will create additional benefit for our members and customers, this new headquarters, The Kaiser Permanente Thrive Center, will also bring tremendous benefits to the Uptown neighborhood, serve as a thriving centre for the city of Oakland, and be a collaborative workspace for our employees.”
Site developer Lane Partners estimates that the new building will generate a one-time $23m economic benefit and more than $15m a year in local tax revenues for the city.
