Clarion Housing Group’s development arm Latimer has named JJ Rhatigan as the main contractor for the Twyford Abbey development in Ealing, UK, to lead the construction of new homes at the site.

JJ Rhatigan is tasked with creating 296 homes, half of which will be classed as affordable.

The contract with JJ Rhatigan follows the completion of preliminary groundworks and paves the way for full-scale construction to commence.

The development is not only focused on providing housing but also on revitalising the local area.

This includes the restoration of a Grade II-listed walled garden for public use and the enhancement of the existing landscape, ensuring the conservation of trees and green spaces.

Additionally, the historic Twyford Abbey itself will undergo a sensitive restoration process.

In collaboration with Picture Property Developments, a property development and investment company, the project aims to convert the building into 30 new homes while maintaining its architectural significance.

Allford Hall Monaghan Morris was selected to design a low-rise development that blends sustainability with the site’s heritage.

Furthermore, the development will reintroduce the abbey’s 1.2-acre South Lawn to the public, which has been inaccessible for many years.

The project is set to include renewable energy features such as rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels and will utilise air-source heat pumps for heating and hot water, which are expected to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions and enhance energy efficiency at the site.

Construction is scheduled to begin this month, following the finalisation of the contract, and the first homes are expected to be concluded by 2027.

Clarion Housing Group chief development officer Richard Cook said: “This contract represents another key milestone in our commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable homes while preserving the historical significance of the site.”

JJ Rhatigan UK managing director Tom Neylon added: “This project offers a unique opportunity to blend contemporary housing solutions with the careful restoration of an important heritage site. We look forward to working with Latimer to deliver a high-quality, sustainable community.”

Last month, fellow construction company GRAHAM was selected by Latimer to spearhead the initial phase of the Dyecoats mixed-use project in Leeds, UK.
