The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) in the US has appointed Jacobs as its prime consultant to deliver general engineering and consultation services for its passenger rail initiatives.

The initiatives are part of the ‘Transforming Rail in Virginia’ infrastructure programme, which is hoped to link communities and improve mobility within the state and beyond.

According to the VPRA’s evaluation, the contract is valued at up to $10m per annum for an initial one-year term, with the option of extension for an additional three years.

The scope of the project involves assisting in the planning, design, construction, and overall maintenance of projects under the programme.

The initiative aims to double the Amtrak state-supported service and enhance the Virginia Railway Express service over the next decade.

Jacobs will offer comprehensive support to improve and expand the existing Amtrak resource, as well as restore Amtrak’s Roanoke to the New River Valley service through solutions such as market analysis and travel demand forecasts.
