Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) has awarded a project management consultancy and engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) contract to McDermott.

This contract is for the Naphtha Cracker Expansion (second phase) and the new ethylene derivative unit project of IOCL.

The Panipat Refinery and Petrochemical Complex is located 100km from the capital city of New Delhi.

The project will boost the naphtha cracker unit’s ethylene output capacity by 20%. It will result in substantial socio-economic benefits to the country and the creation of jobs in the region.

Additional ethylene and propylene output will be used to feed downstream polymer plants. Polymer materials will be utilised to make domestic and industrial objects such as containers, vehicle components, furniture, and heavy-duty films.

McDermott Global Operations’ senior vice-president Vaseem Khan said: “McDermott is currently executing four other projects for IOCL, including the maleic anhydride (MAH) unit at the same site, allowing us to leverage our local resources and expertise while realising synergies.

“Furthermore, the project supports the growing demand for ethylene and propylene which will reduce imports and accelerate economic development in the area.”

For the course of the project, McDermott will provide complete EPCM services, as well as overall project management, from its Center of Excellence in Gurugram, Haryana, India.
