India has started the construction of its new parliament building in Delhi under the government’s Central Vista redevelopment project.

Construction is expected to be completed in August 2022, in time for the country’s 75th Independence Day.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the parliament building, which is being developed by Tata Projects.

Designed by Gujarat-based architecture firm HCP Designs, the building will spread over 64,500m². It will have the capacity to house 1,244 Member of Parliaments (MPs).

The Lok Sabha chamber will have capacity for 888 MPs while the Rajya Sabha will be able to sit 384 MPs.

The new parliament building will feature a Constitution Hall that will reflect the democratic heritage of the country. It will also feature a lounge for MPs, a library, several committee rooms, dining areas, and ample parking space.
