The New York state government has begun a $86.7m pavement improvement project on a nearly five-mile stretch of the New England Thruway (I-95) in Westchester County in the US.
This initiative is set to enhance the structural integrity of a corridor that accommodates around 120,000 vehicles daily.
The I-95 project will start with pavement repairs, targeting the removal and replacement of the most deteriorated sections on a stretch of roadway (milepost 4.0 to 8.8) in both directions.
Spanning close to 30 total lane-miles, these repairs are designed to extend the service life of the roadway and reduce the frequency of temporary repairs.
Following the concrete pavement and joint repairs, a two-course asphalt overlay will be applied.
The project encompasses the highway from just south of exit 15 (New Rochelle – The Pelhams – US Route 1) to exit 18A (Mamaroneck – Fenimore Road), including the rehabilitation and repaving of 12 interchange ramps.
The project also entails work on 12 bridges located above or below I-95.
Six bridges will undergo rehabilitation, including key structures such as the Centre Avenue bridge in New Rochelle and the Chatsworth Avenue bridge in Larchmont, as well as the bridge serving Metro-North Railroad’s Larchmont station.
The remaining six bridges on I-95 will also be resurfaced.
To enhance safety, the project will introduce new guide rails and lights, additional reflective line striping, new pavement markings, and kerb replacements.
To minimise disruption, paving operations and the bulk of the work will be conducted overnight.
DeFoe, based in Mount Vernon, New York, has been contracted for the project, which is expected to reach completion by the end of 2026.
In conjunction, a separate $61.8m pavement improvement project on I-95 in the Bronx and southern Westchester is on track to be completed in mid-2025, covering milepost 0.0 to 4.0, including 11 bridge rehabilitations and enhancements to two pedestrian bridges in the Bronx.
New York State Thruway Authority executive director Frank G Hoare said: ”We are continuing our ongoing investment in Interstate 95, one of the most critical highway arteries in the Northeast. For the past several years, we have rehabilitated the highway from the Bronx into Westchester County.
“This project will continue this vital work for another five miles in Westchester by upgrading the roadway and its surrounding infrastructure for our neighbouring communities, and the motorists that travel this commuter and commercial corridor.”
The New York government recently initiated a $61.5m pavement improvement project on the New York State Thruway, I-90, spanning Ontario and Monroe counties.
