Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) has broken ground on a new $5.54bn electric vehicle and battery manufacturing plant at Bryan County, Georgia, US.

The ground breaking ceremony was attended by Hyundai Motor Group executive chair Euisun Chung, Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp, and the company officials, and state and local leaders.

HMGMA and its affiliate suppliers announced plans to construct the plant in May.

Over the next few years, HMGMA plans to generate more than 8,100 jobs as it intends to set up a steady supply chain for EV battery and other components in US.

The factory is anticipated to start commercial production in the first half of 2025, with an annual production capacity of 300,000 units.

Chung said: “Hyundai and the people of Georgia share many qualities: respect for our histories, ingenuity, creativity, and determination to make the world better for the next generation.

“Today, our EVs are recognized as best in class, and with this partnership, we are determined to be the global leader in electrification, safety, quality, and sustainability. With the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, we will continue to evolve beyond an automaker to the world’s leading mobility solutions provider.”

Governor Kemp said: “With more Georgians working than ever before, record jobs and investment coming to all parts of our state, and award-winning workforce development programs and infrastructure, the Peach State’s economy is reaching new heights”.

Non-affiliated HMGMA suppliers are expected to invest around $1bn in connection to the project in other locations.

This plant is part of Hyundai Motor Group’s electrification efforts to achieve a global target of selling 3.23 million completely electric vehicles annually by the end of this decade.

The yet to-built facility in Georgia will become an intelligent manufacturing plant, with all processes of production, right from order collection, procurement, logistics and production to be optimised leveraging artificial intelligence and data.

The facility will primarily depend on clean energy sources and use emission-reduction technologies.
