The High Speed Two (HS2) rail project has commenced its procurement process for a specialist contractor to deliver platform edge doors for its Old Oak Common and other stations.

The scope of the proposed framework agreement includes the supply of the platform barrier and automatic doors, as well as the platforms’ edge itself.

These structures will be similar to the ones deployed at London’s new Elizabeth Line stations.

The framework agreement and call-off contracts, comprising maintenance and optional extra scope for Manchester Airport station, are estimated to value £93m.

Both deals are anticipated to be awarded in early 2025.

The selected bidder will work with HS2 to confirm the platform edge doors design and subsequently liaise with the stations’ and systems’ contractors to install, test, commission, and offer support and maintenance.

Furthermore, the framework agreement will feature an option to deliver the same system for the planned station in Manchester Airport in the Phase 2b portion from Birmingham to Manchester.

HS2 procurement director Andrew Cubitt said: “Once complete, HS2 will transform journeys across the UK, help to boost the economy and support the UK’s transition to net zero.

“Platform edge doors will help improve safety and enhance the customer experience at Old Oak Common and Interchange stations.”

HS2 seeks to strengthen rail links between London, Birmingham, and the northern regions of the country. It also aims to offer a zero-carbon alternative to car and air transport.

Construction of this project has so far supported roughly 30,000 jobs in the UK.

In the first phase, four major stations will be constructed between London and Birmingham, thereby enabling passengers to interchange with local transport, along with connections to both Heathrow’s and Birmingham’s airports.
