Construction of Herzog & de Meuron’s M+ museum building in Kowloon, Hong Kong has been completed.
Currently, museum staff occupy the building and are preparing for a public opening of M+ in late 2021.
The building consists of 65’000 square metres of space for the museum, which includes 17’000 square metres for various exhibition and display areas. The Occupation Permit was received on 24 December 2020.
Located on the Victoria Harbour waterfront in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District, the M+ lies on land reclaimed from the sea. The underground railway tunnel housing the Airport Express intersects the site, providing a uniqueness to the place.
Excavation around the existing tunnels reveals this area as a “found space” with unmatched potential for large-scale installations, almost riveting the entire building to the ground.
A facade with integrated LED lighting faces the waterfront, activating M+ as a giant display screen, establishing the building as an integral part of the Victoria Harbour skyline.

By GlobalDataThe top floors house a lounge, public restaurants and a large outdoor roof garden on the horizontal podium, providing visitors with a panoramic view of Hong Kong.
Herzog & de Meuron founder Jacques Herzog stated: “M+ certainly has the potential to become the major visual culture museum in Asia. It best expresses where we should go as a world culture, where diversity, equality and access to art of all kinds are expressed from the very beginning. This kind of diversity and broadness is part of the DNA of M+. This makes it a museum, which is very much locally inspired, but at the same time universal and open: it is for the people and visitors across the world.”
Herzog & de Meuron teamed up with TFP Farrells as local partner architect and Arup as engineering consultant for the M+ project.
