Henning Larsen and partners has been selected as the master plan consultant for the surface streets along Singapore’s 21.5km North-South Corridor (NSC).

NSC is a multi-modal transportation corridor designed to improve connectivity between the northern region and the city, serving areas including Sembawang, Yishun, Ang Mo Kio, and more.

Land Transport Authority (LTA) Design Advisory Panel chief executive and chairperson Ng Lang said: “The North-South Corridor presents an opportunity for us to transform surface streets into a landmark Corridor for Singapore.

“It offers new experiences through integrating active mobility options, welcoming public spaces and meaningful connections to places to benefit local communities.”

Following a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process, LTA sought out for multi-disciplinary design teams to develop a Master Plan for the NSC’s surface streets.

The RFP garnered interest from 26 design teams, both local and international, with CPG Consultants, Henning Larsen, and Mitsubishi Jisho Design being shortlisted to present preliminary Concept Master Plans.

Henning Larsen’s proposal, which was themed ‘Singapore’s Life Reserve – a Place for All’, aims to transform the area into a people-centric space, enhancing active mobility and greenery integration.

It is claimed that approximately 30 football fields’ worth of road space will be repurposed for public use, as the majority of vehicular traffic will be redirected through the NSC tunnel and viaduct.

The vision for the NSC further includes four character segments: a 6km Community-Industrial segment, a 7km Ecological Loop, a 5km People’s Wellness Corridor, and a 3.5km Cultural-Heritage Segment.

These segments will feature more than 20 public space nodes that reflect the adjacent neighbourhoods and destinations.

Henning Larsen Singapore country market director Leonard Ng said: “We’re not just redesigning the surface streets; we’re crafting a living, breathing space that will be a blueprint for future mobility and urban living, one that can inspire similar transformation in cities across the world. Together with the community, we are building a corridor that will grow and adapt with Singapore, ensuring our city remains resilient, inclusive, and vibrant for generations to come.”

The Master Plan is anticipated to be finished by 2026, with the repurposing of the NSC’s surface streets commencing in stages from 2027.
