Swedish property owner Hemsö is set to develop a new nursery and primary school in the Pasila district of Helsinki, Finland, with a capacity for 850 students.
Hemsö has signed a 20-year lease agreement with the City of Helsinki for the new educational facility.
The project encompasses a leasable area of 7,200m² for the school building and an additional 3,400m² for the schoolyard.
The new school will cater to 650 primary school students and 200 nursery children.
The development, which will take place in the growing residential area of Northern Pasila, is being built as a substitute for the temporary school facilities currently in use at the site.
Construction is set to begin in mid-2025. The estimated construction period is around two years, with the building expected to achieve an A energy class rating upon completion.
The new school will utilise a range of locally produced energy sources, including geothermal heating, air-water heat pumps, and solar panels.
The existing temporary school will remain operational during the construction period.
This project in Pasila represents Hemsö’s fifth educational project with the City of Helsinki in recent years.
The company previously developed several school buildings, contributing to a total of 2,800 new school places.
Hemsö Finland project manager Kirsi Viheriäranta said: “It is exciting to be part of developing a public building that will become a landmark for the new residential area. We have had a very good collaboration with the City of Helsinki in the ongoing development projects, and we can benefit from the experiences we have gained in other projects together with the city. Hemsö’s focus is on delivering premises that meet the needs of our tenants in the best possible way.
“Together with the construction contractor, we are carefully planning secure access routes for the students. The schoolyard at the temporary school will also be adapted to interact with the construction site.”
Last month, another company, SRV, embarked on a new venture with the City of Helsinki to initiate the Maunula housing project in the Oulunkylä district.
