Ealing Council in the UK has announced that its planning committee has approved the redevelopment of the Gurnell Leisure Centre in London.

The project includes a new 50m swimming pool, a water park with slides, climbing walls, a gym, and a skate park, along with spaces for meetings, children’s parties, play areas, and a café.

Additionally, 450 trees will be planted to enhance biodiversity in the area.

Built in the 1970s, the Gurnell Leisure Centre has long been a cornerstone for local health and wellness activities. However, its deteriorating condition led to permanent closure in August 2020.

The site, situated within Metropolitan Open Land (MOL), faced a rejected planning application in 2021, prompting the council to revise the proposals to align with MOL requirements.

In February 2023, Ealing Council’s cabinet endorsed the concept of a new leisure centre, featuring a 50m pool and a modern fitness studio.

The council’s initiative aims to broaden the scope of fitness and well-being services and establish a new swimming hub for borough residents. The revised plans also propose improvements to the surrounding open spaces and the addition of mixed-tenure housing, with a substantial portion being affordable homes.

With the planning committee’s approval, the application will now proceed to the Greater London Authority for further endorsement.

The leisure centre’s inauguration is expected in early 2027.
