Granite Construction has secured a contract for the rehabilitation of pavement along State Route 41 (SR 41) near Stratford, California, US.
The contract, valued at approximately $15m, has been commissioned by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
It is set to provide a smoother travel experience and reduce future maintenance requirements.
The rehabilitation work will involve the removal and replacement of deteriorated pavement sections with 49,400 tons (t) of hot mix asphalt (HMA).
Following this, a surface course consisting of 19,100t of rubberised HMA (RHMA) will be laid.
The RHMA will be supplied by Granite’s Coalinga plant located in Fresno County.

Upgrades to guard railing and barriers are also planned, alongside the replacement of failing bridge approaches with new concrete approach slabs.
These enhancements are aimed at improving safety and infrastructure resilience.
Granite Regional Operations vice-president Carter Rohrbough said: “Our team is proud to take on the challenge of enhancing SR 41, a vital connector between the Central Valley and the Central Coast.
“With numerous pavement failures impacting this heavily travelled two-lane highway, we’re committed to delivering smoother roads and reducing maintenance burdens for Caltrans crews. Our expertise and dedication will ensure a safer and more efficient journey for all travellers.”
The funding for this infrastructure project is sourced from the Caltrans and will be accounted for in Granite’s second-quarter committed and awarded projects.
Commencement of the SR 41 pavement rehabilitation is scheduled for July 2024, with completion anticipated in July 2025.
Granite is currently managing two other construction projects along SR 41, which intersect with or are situated within the vicinity of the latest project.
Last month, Granite won a subcontract to support the United Airlines Terminal B Airside Transformation programme at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, US.
